A great father

What I learned today: Adrenoleukodystrophy or ALD is a disease which attacks the myelin and eventually kills(discovered by Creuzfeldt who did work on JCD or human transmissable spongeform ecephalopathy which is basically mad cow disease in humans).

The treatment was developed not by doctors but by an economist whose son was affected by the disease and was expected to die soon. He spent entire nights in the libraries going over medical journals and discovered the damage was done by long-chain fatty acids.

The cure he came up with – rapeseed and olive oil. It did undo the brain damage done to his son but he did live 20 years longer than expected and died from pneumonia, not ALD. It does, however, prevent ALD from starting in those genetically vulnerable and can stop the disease once in motion.
